Benefits of Raw Local Honey

Once upon a time when I was a little girl just barely able to see over the tabletop we were at our grandmother’s house for Sunday dinner. The table was set with her finest china and silverware. The glass-cut butter dishes were patiently setting there, each with a beautiful pat of homemade butter on it. Beside each butter dish was a small glass bowl with something kind of darkish in it. I had no idea what it was! Come time to eat, the bread was passed and that darkish “stuff” got smeared on my bread. It was kind of good, but I still didn’t know what it was until years later! Today I know. It was raw honey possibly from my grandfather’s own hives.

There were many more things that I did not know back then!

I did not know that raw local honey is one of nature’s purest foods for promoting general health. There are so many benefits to honey; truly it is one of nature’s superfoods! Let’s take a look.

Honey for Seasonal Allergies

If you’re someone who suffers from seasonal allergies, you’re ingesting allergens from the local environment. Bees collect pollen that is from local plants and that also circulates in the air. Since your seasonal allergies are caused by allergens from your environment, eating honey will help your body to adjust to local allergens each year.

Some people take allergy shots to treat their seasonal allergies. Eating raw local honey helps similarly. When bees pollinate, they bring back traces of pollen with them, which stays in the honey. Only trace amounts are left in the honey, but it’s enough to build immunity to the allergen. Bit by bit your immune system will get used to these plants and once you’ve built enough immunity your seasonal allergy symptoms decrease.

Most folks recommend you take a whole tbls. a day for allergies. I would say it is wise to start with a teaspoon a day and work your way up gradually.

Honey, A Powerful Immune Booster

Honey is also a powerful booster to the immune system. It contains lots of minerals, amino acids, and thousands of enzymes. It keeps you healthy by fighting disease and boosting the digestive system.

I find the part interesting about the digestive system. There is so much emphasis nowadays on how fermented foods are so good for your gut. Well, fermented foods are actually partially digested or “broken down” foods, thus making it easier for our stomach to digest them.

I find it sooo sweet that God created the bee to break down pollen and nectar into a form where it is easy for our bodies to assimilate the values of the nutrition of them— in the form of HONEY!

Pro tip

If your honey carmalizes in the jar, bring a pot of water to boiling. Take the pot off the stove and set your jar in the hot water for a few hours. Your honey will return to its normal runny state!
